This photographic project explores the extraordinary landscape and rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Ethiopia’s most significant spiritual and architectural landmarks.
Through the lens of Flavia Rossi, the work investigates the relationship between territory, sacred architecture, and space, capturing churches carved directly into volcanic rock. The images reveal not only their monumental presence, but also their deep integration with the surrounding landscape and the distinct architectural language that defines them.
Beyond documentation, the project offers a way to better understand the context in which Kirea operates, highlighting local initiatives such as the Bashilo Library and Kirea Bakery, both contributing to the social and cultural development of the area.
By merging photography and architectural representation, the project aims to promote Lalibela’s cultural heritage and encourage greater awareness, exploration, and engagement with this unique place.
The project will be exhibited at MAXXI Museum in Rome as part of the exhibition Creatures, Creators: Saint Francis and Contemporary Art.
